Wireless Ethernet update

Tue May 1, 2001 - 10:43 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

As you may know, the SpringPort Wireless Ethernet (802.11b) Springboard module from Xircom is due this quarter. At speeds of up to 11 Mbps, it will be interesting to see how fast HotSyncs will become.

That speed comes at a price, however. According to sources, the SpringPort Wireless Ethernet module will retail at $299 -- not much cheaper than Xircom's own Wireless Ethernet Access Point ($349).

If the WE module does turn out to cost almost three hundred dollars, this will be a blow to the burgeoning home network market. With most Palm OS applications not needing a broadband connection, it will be hard to justify buying a $299 module for the Visor when you just bought a $100 PCMCIA card or Airport card for your laptop.

Will you buy the Wireless Ethernet module if it is $299? Discuss it here.
