The PC is Dead

Wed Feb 14, 2001 - 10:28 AM EST - By Alan Graham

Final Thoughts

The PC as we know it is dead. But, I believe the handheld will dictate the next stage of growth for the PC. Until PC manufacturers realize this, it is my belief that PC sales will continue to slump while handheld sales climb. Also, while companies are running around in circles trying to develop a cute and happy consumer Internet Appliance (instead of inventing the future), Handspring has developed the first platform to hint at what power we may hold in our hands.

Larry Ellison's first n|c vision for the home was right. But the key to unlocking that power is in your hand. Currently my Visor may not talk to my server or control my lights, but with the right visionaries out there, it will. The Visor has opened the door to the next stage of computing, and I am ready to step through it.

Part 2: Design and the Evolution of the Handheld.

In Part 2 I will explore how the element of design will affect the next stage in the evolution of the handheld. Be sure to check it out as I will have an interview with the IDEO design team responsible for the EyeModule.
