Hawkins: What limitations?

Fri Dec 15, 2000 - 8:46 AM EST - By James Hromadka

Jeff HawkinsJeff Hawkins, co-founder of Handspring, was on hand at PalmSource and spoke about some of the issues in the Palm operating system. This Wired article has some good details on some of the things Hawkins used to demonstrate the power of the Palm OS. According to the article, "Hawkins admitted the Palm OS suffered from some problems with multitasking (the ability to do more than one thing at a time), and limited memory and processor speed. But he said they were irritations, not crippling limitations."

But what I thought was interesting was the second page of the article where there's a story about a reporter who used the Visor and Stowaway keyboard to get around the media restrictions in Burma. By doing this, Ben Hammersley, a technology reporter for the Times of London, was able to interview Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

Industry pundits have been predicting the demise of the PC. Perhaps we soon see the demise of the laptop as well.
