Check the fundamentals, then try a soft reset.

You sure that you have batteries in the thing, and that they're inserted correctly. If so try a new pair of batteries. (Note that I've had the thing in that almost dead battery state before I changed the batteries, with no loss of data.) If that doesn't work try setting the contrast (tiny black and white circle at bottom left). If that doesn't work then try a soft reset.
