MacCentral has this article on Lucent developing a modem chipset that uses a DSP and codec chip that are each less than the size of a thumbtack and consume very little power.

At $8-$13 when purchased 10,000 at a time, Palm and Handspring could conceivably make a Visor with a built-in modem at some point.
